poem: “blessed longing”
a translation of Goethe’s “Selige Sehnsucht” in honour of the 173 anniversary of his birth
TELL no one but the wise
for throngs will merely scoff:
I praise what is alive
and what longs for death by fire.
in the cool nights of love
where you get, as you were once begotten
a strange feeling falls upon you
as the candle, silent, gleams.
nevermore shall you be captive
amongst these darkling shades;
a new desire rends you
towards an higher conjugation.
no distance can weigh upon you
you come soaring and enraptured
and at last, longing for the light
thou, butterfly: transform yourself in flame.
and so long as thou hast not this:
‘Die, and then become again!’
thou are but a dark guest
upon this sullen Earth.1
Sagt es niemand, nur den Weisen,
Weil die Menge gleich verhöhnet,
Das Lebend’ge will ich preisen,
Das nach Flammentod sich sehnet.
In der Liebesnächte Kühlung,
Die dich zeugte, wo du zeugtest,
Überfällt dich fremde Fühlung,
Wenn die stille Kerze leuchtet.
Nicht mehr bleibest du umfangen
In der Finsternis Beschattung,
Und dich reißet neu Verlangen
Auf zu höherer Begattung.
Keine Ferne macht dich schwierig,
Kommst geflogen und gebannt,
Und zuletzt, des Lichts begierig,
Bist du Schmetterling verbrannt.
Und so lang du das nicht hast,
Dieses: Stirb und werde!
Bist du nur ein trüber Gast
Auf der dunklen Erde.
Thank you Max. And Happy 173rd Birthday to JWG !
