liturgy of the seasons (22)
a weekly translation of Rudolf Steiner’s Seelenkalender verse
IN 1912-1913, Rudolf Steiner created a sort of liturgy of the natural and spiritual year in the form of fifty-two short verses. Experience—my own and others—testifies to the powerful effect that a short meditation on the relevant verse throughout the course of the year can have in respect to awakening and sensitizing the soul to each season’s unique quality and gesture.
Below is Dr. Steiner’s original Seelenkalender, or “Calendar of the Soul” verse for this week followed by my translation into English. I have opted to follow, whenever a conflict arose, the spirit over the letter in my translation efforts, attempting to convey the “mood” before the propositional content.
TWENTY-SECOND WEEK OF THE YEAR 22. Das licht aus weltenweiten, im innern lebt es kräftig fort: es wird zum seelenlichte und leuchtet in die geistestiefen, um früchte zu entbinden, die menschenselbst aus weltenselbst im zeitenlaufe reifen lassen. ∇∆ THE dying light of world-wide spaces within me springs to second life: the soul receives the light of worlds and leads it down unto her depths, therein newborn cosmic fruits to foster an orchard bringing forth the human self to ripen in the course of time.
It is explained here in the first lecture of "Michaelmas and the Soul Forces of Man" that when Michael won the War in Heaven, which occurred between 1841 and 1879, and then cast down to Earth a group of Ahrimanic spirits, that He also sacrificed a measure of His Being by impressing His image in the human etheric body, and thus creating a shield and a sword as a kind of magnetic center against these Ahrimanic spirits being able to gain any kind of foothold in further contracting the etheric body. Michael's more intimate relationship with the individual human spirit also begins here in 1879 with this victory and the New Michael Age.
